In the books, he looked at her when he entered the Cullen’s home & knew something was off with her right away. The only person in the whole series that wouldn’t have noticed a difference would be Renee. She didn’t look quite like herself, Twilight Zone Bella if you will. Hugging her cold body would have just been the nail in the metaphorical coffin honestly.
