My hot take: people who are paying to go to a larp should not be forced to work while attending an event they paid for … npc shifts, clean up duty, etc. Encouraged volunteering? Yes! In game rewards? Sure! But forcing player base to do so instead of hiring staff? Not cool

Ren-Faire should have an adults only weekend and people should be mindful that children are going to be present otherwise

Extremely hot one. American LARPs need to get more comfortable with having more costuming expectations/standards. Not all of them. But it's okay to ask for and expect a level of looking good/presentable/immersive.

The same 10 3D products shouldn't be sold at ren faires. Yes i'm looking at you, articulated dragon fidget toys. Also, ban very obvious resellers. Why should I be paying $40 for items clearly bought from Amazon or Aliexpress that are in actuality $10?

immersive LARP shouldn't be so restrictive on technology for SAFETY AND HEALTH PURPOSES like on God I know "immersion" but nobody should be risking heat stroke

We need more Ren faires in the fall and winter. It gets way too hot at the end of the spring/in the summer

A ✨disaster✨ :
north american larps need to stop designing like they’re TTRPGs with extra steps and embrace that they’re their own thing with its own restrictions. there is absolutely no reason your rulebook needs to be longer than, like, maybe 50 pages if there’s a lot of fluff. its unreasonable to ask anyone to hold that much information in their head.

I love trinket trading as a concept (and keep little fish tank glass pebbles for the purpose if kids ask while I'm vending) but using them as tips for performers is absolutely horrendous. They can't pay rent in 3D printed ducks and stuff just ends up in the trash

my ren faire hot take: folks need to stop telling people that its ok if they want to attend and not dress up. I dont care if its a tunic from Amazon, if they dont want to be silly and play dress up with the rest of us, then they can go to a farmers market and stop overcrowding faires if they're not going to participate in the merriment.

Ren fairs should ban trinket trading across the board.

Actually delusional :
I know it takes away from the immersion, but coming from someone who's Ren sets up in Ohio summers.... large fans beside the walkways, or mesh shade covers to help keep cool. it gets HOT and I'm sure it could fall under the same community idea as "shoes don't count". I know upkeep can get expensive but if you up the ticket prices $1-5 per person it'll rack up fast. honestly I'd pay more+ donate if it meant being more comfortable.

This is a hater take, but I’m the #1 hater of the Amazon corset when it comes to renfaire and larp spaces because they’re poor quality, ugly, and take away from the businesses and artisans who create real, unique pieces

just because you're a huge fan of (insert pro act, vendor, performer here) and have seen and interacted with a ton of their content doesn't mean you know them or are friends. that is a stranger at their job. be respectful, be polite, tip them (if appropriate).

renfares that don't allow trinket trading suck and Jack the Whipper is overrated imo (I'm not saying he doesn't deserve all the fans he has or that he's bad or anything) but I've seen him in person and I really don't get the hype

I really do believe ren-faires should have a max capacity. So you CAN walk around, have personal space & just get to enjoy your time / get your money worth. Nothing worse than dense crowds / long lines during a hot day.

My hot take: bring back gate keeping. Ren faires got too popular because of social media and influencers and aren’t fun anymore.

The amount of polycules I've seen generated at / because of a LARP that turn into full blown political tribunals or implode a game is awkwardly high and needs to stop

I know this applies to a lot of spaces but is getting really bad at Faire - there is a difference in feeling safe to be your open authentic self and just putting your kink on display and forcing everyone else to observe. If your only personality trait is the specific fashion in which you like to fuck, not everyone wants to see that. Also there are kids around.

Most foam fighting groups (Belegarth, Dagorhir etc.) need to stop describing themselves as LARP bc there’s very little RP involved. It leads to a lot of confusion when recruiting

Trinket trading needs to be restricted to actually small, cheap, things. People keep trying to out-do eachother every year, and some of the things people are trading are way too grand, and if it’s not controlled, it’s going to get to a point where it’s just bartering, which isn’t fair to the folks to pay huge fees to sell things out there. It’s fun to feel involved, but when folks are leaving trinkets instead of tips (which they do), and asking booths if they trinket trade (which they also do), it’s getting too far already.
