It isn’t possible to get into a masters program without the social capital. You either have to be pretty, well-connected, or rich. Heard how a pretty girl got her prof to fake her references, and then heard the other two from a scholarship meeting.

That is true but does it have as much valence in countries where college is free or even the US where it’s much more common to attend now? I think the cultural capital of a degree has deflated to some extent. I think it also doesn’t address that despite that college does still teach tangible comprehension and composition skills etc. which are being eroded. The same way I and a lot of people my age can’t navigate that well without google maps etc

while this is true I lean more toward the Foucauldian view of school in which school is an apparatus of power and domination used to teach and replicate subordination through discipline, time management, and knowledge. school as a form of social capital and it's exchange really only applies in cases where the school and the students have social capital the school I attended we were all working class people where no one had a leverage above anyone else.

The book privileged by Sheamus Khan pretty much shows that they were coasting in elite schools for a long time. they basically learned to be cultural carnivores and can just say whatever sounds good in the current context

Check this book out; Capital As Power by Jonathan Nitzan and Shimshon Bichler. Al forms of capital are the same in our capitalistic mega machine; economic capital. Hence you could in the future "cash" your social or polítical capital. And more importantly capital is nothing more than a quantitative measure of power.

So the concepts of cultural capital and social capital are largely hidden from the masses and then the so-called ruling class pass these types of capital on to their kids.

This is why I'm a goddamn paladin for community colleges. They are about learning and skill building and they are almost always affordable or free. You can learn how to weld, get your CDL, Put on your own black box production, make your own short film, etc. Most of the professors actually work in the industries they teach in.
