Plastic really freaks me out because I was startled during an exam and had one break inside of me. The mechanism that is meant to keep it open failed and it cut me. Metal is good enough for me

The side wall retractors on the nella kind don’t actually offer enough sturdiness to ge the tissue out of the way and can cause pinching. The reason it hasn’t taken off is it’s not actually effective for many people. I think the sturdiness of the new petals of this newer version could be an improvement

GYN RN here. Is definitely about cost. The nella specs only also only come In one size. There’s about 4 different sizes we keep in stock in each room, about 12 total I would say. Box of 10 nella specs is $1,600, 10 metals specs would probably be $200. Idk how many specs we have total in our clinic but it’s probably close to 100-200 to stock each room plus back ups. So it would be very expensive to replace all the metal speculums.

The problem is that its not just cost its more plastic waste where most healthcare providers are actively trying to reduce plastic waste and single use items, a reusable speculem costs apx 80 and costs less than 10 to have it cleaned and sterilised

I think I got lucky to have the best obygn even though I live in a rural area. Like genuinely, I had to wait a couple months for the appointment but so many decisions were made for my comfort (being prescribed Valium for IUD insertion, the use of a smaller plastic speculum, etc)

the whole process takes 30 seconds. it's traumatic regardless, I don't care for "more" or "less" comfort if it's gonna be uncomfortable all together. like choosing between discomfort at 10 or 8, it doesn't matter. if it ain't zero discomfort, just shove it in, do the swab, pull it out, and let me get my panties back on as fast as possible😅

The clear plastic speculum broke inside me while my doctor was using it. Pinched so badly! The metal one wasn't comfortable but it didn't pinch nearly as much
