My partner has trouble with the follow through. The kids start screaming and crying and it stresses my her out. Her being a stay at home parent while I’m at work makes it harder for me to support her when I’m not home.

I have two autistic kiddos and the “first ___ then ___” has been a huge game changer. Even kids with some learning or social issues do well with this one and it’s helped me so much

My son’s dad is like this w/ him at his house 😔. At my/our house we set rotating timers (we both have pretty severe adhd). 30 minutes of reading and 10 minutes of chores earns 1 hr of screen time. Sometimes he reads for an hour and does 20 minutes of chores for 2 hrs screen time (always his choice). The precedent is set and the timer is what’s telling him to move on to the next thing. I haven’t raised my voice once since we implemented this

I try to do this with my 5yr old twins. Hell…I do this with myself at night when I finally have time to myself. “First dishes, then gaming” 😂

I do it with my oldest he has a curfew for his phone at night and he cannot get it back to all of his chores are done in the morning, and he has a timer on his phone to remind him to recheck his chores

I would also add expect an expectation of limiting gaming to a certain time frame and chores in a certain time frame. If they know what’s expected ahead of time natural consequences can be enforced without punishment

Yes, and be consistent with it, which, to be fair, is the hardest part, but if you aren't, they'll figure out quickly how to manipulate the situation.

setting clear expectations and guidelines are huge helps as well! I asked my kids how can I help them remember their tasks and follow our family rules, and they said timers, set reminders (like on Google home) and writing it down in a visible place! We worked it out together and it made a huge difference!

I regret the day I ever got a tablet. But my kid is all alone and lonely. I can’t have more kids. He kept asking for a sibling. I assumed out would help. But he’s not addicted to it. He just wants it at tunes I don’t think he should have it. He feels like if it’s his it should never be removed.

This is very helpful. I have a 9 y/o grandson who is on the autism spectrum and suffers from ADHD. I find that giving him fair warning and setting a timer for when it’s time to turn off YouTube or gaming is very helpful. I tell him I’m setting a timer and when the timer goes off, he turns off the TV and console.
