@cbcnews: Your social insurance number is the "master key" to your identity. Cybersecurity expert Claudiu Popa says protecting it starts with just saying no to most companies and organizations that request it. #privacy #cybersecurity #fraud #canada🇨🇦 #cbcradio
So, when is a law coming to prevent some from asking for it? 🤔 What are we doing about it besides telling us?

if it's such a big problem (and nobody's saying it's not, anybody with a brain knows it is) then the government needs to start regulating who can have it, how long they get to keep it for and they need to start holding these companies accountable for all these breaches! It's out of hand! lots of companies will not give you service without having your sim number and they shouldn't be allowed to withhold service for that reason

Ok but it also pisses me off that now my social insurance number has to be on just a loose sheet of paper instead of the laminated card like how it used to be

How broken and outdated does a system have to be for just knowing my SIN to be dangerous? If it’s that risky, the system is the real problem.

Small correction, your insurance company that offers financial services with dividends etc will ask you for it. It is an investment and that is going to be needed for tax time.

for people who have student loans with National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) they'll always ask you for your SIN or 7 digit student loan number. the phone line is secure to disclose such information since it is a federal agency.
