@speedifylive: Why is Amtrak train WiFi so bad? Explained Ever wonder why free WiFi on trains is so painfully slow and unreliable? In this video, we break down the real technical reasons why train WiFi feels useless and what can be done to improve it. While trains rely on cellular antennas to provide onboard internet, they suffer from major line-of-sight issues, frequent tower handoffs, and coverage blackouts in tunnels or rural areas. Unlike planes flying above the interference, trains are constantly obstructed by terrain, buildings, and motion blur between cell towers. So what’s the solution? We explore why technologies like Power Line Communication (PLC) over train tracks aren’t practical and how a smarter mix of cellular and satellite internet (Starlink), with better failover and signal bonding, could finally deliver fast, stable train WiFi. #trains #networkengineer #TechTips #technology #technews #engineering #starlink #techtok

please look into the Wi-Fi on the Blue train in south Africa. 30mbs near constant and stable, we did all that on Lte and WDS. Was not easy

Amtrak (in many regions) has a catenary system of high voltage bare copper wire running overhead. That's probably not great for WiFi signal either

I expected that trains were using Starlink or something similar. They have anyennas and plans for mobility.

I mean speed doesn’t help. Data will take longer in 1 direction.

Definitely something is the key it’s the combo between technologies and an auto switch when a threshold is detected ( latency , bandwidth etc ) . However satellite on train is actually the trend but politics matter are making the progress very slow in my opinion

This is easy but does require investment, the best way is always a leaky feeder, running the length of the track. this can then deliver multiple services.

This is way too simplistic. There's also a lazy factor here. If I have great speed over 4G and 5G on my phone while in the train, then the train WiFi clearly could be fast too, but they aren't. They just didn't bother have the infrastructure to provide decent WiFi
