Hi Erik. On the topic of Chicago accents - can you speak on the difference between the names Dawn and Don? To me these are pronounced the same, but I have a friend from Chicago that says people always call him Dawn instead of Don

As someone from the Great Lakes (Grand Rapids, MI to be specific) whenever I hear someone do a Great Lakes accent like you just did here, it always sounds like Chicago to me - very different from the way I talk and other around here. Is the Chicago accent just the stereotype for this region? I'm sure we have some sort of accent but I feel like where I live, we sound different from them. Loved your videos for years - back in the YouTube days! Excited to see you here!

The Great Lakes is an interest area because it covers quite a large part of the US, but I'm in Ohio and we definitely don't have that tense trap. To me, that sounds the stereotypical MN accent.

I live in northern Michigan and I pronounce bag and beg exactly the same. wasn't until the military that I realized it was different.

Why do most actors attempting a New York or Philadelphia accent miss the lax A before a nasal that starts the next syllable? That’s a distinctive feature of those accents, but they (or their coaches) use an exaggerated tense A there. Nothing takes me out of a show more than a stereotypical New York accent that slips up and does “meahnager”

That's really interesting. I'm from Northeast Ohio, and I've definitely noticed the tensing across the board in people from Cleveland, but I don't think I do it, an hour south in Youngstown.

was def curious about this- my parents grew up in chicago and both have the trap/tram split, and when they raised me in NE indiana they'd make fun of that northern city shift vowel (and the random Rs that turn "wash" into "warsh"). i'm looking forward to learnjng more!

It seems like regions that lack a trap-tram split have also resisted the cot-caught merger, i.e. the Great Lakes or Northern City Shift. Is this an accurate observation and if so, why does that overlap exist? Looking forward to your video on the NCS! Love your content, thanks for sharing with us!

My husband is from North Carolina where I’m from northern Michigan and he makes fun of how I cut the syllables out of words apparently. Is this a Michigan specific thing or a Midwest thing? 😭
