How awesome is that?! What we are seeing here is melanism, a genetic variation caused by a recessive allele, which leads to an overproduction of pigment. But here is the wild part: just because this leopard is black doesn’t mean her cubs will be. Melanism isn’t automatically passed down, both parents must carry the gene. It’s rare. It’s beautiful. And it’s a genetic jackpot for camouflage under the cover of night.
