Before you put on the mask, know where it came from. Halloween began as Samhain, a pagan festival of the ancient Celts. They believed the souls of the dead returned that night, and wore masks so the ghosts wouldn’t recognise them. (Encyclopaedia Britannica) The name changed. The mask stayed. When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, the people had two days they played on from before Islam. He ﷺ said: إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَبْدَلَكُمْ بِهِمَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُمَا: يَوْمَ الْأَضْحَى وَيَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ “Allah has substituted for them something better than them: the day of sacrifice and the day of the breaking of the fast.” — Sunan Abi Dawud 1134 · Sahih And he ﷺ said: مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” — Sunan Abi Dawud 4031 · Hasan Sahih Among the qualities of the servants of the Most Merciful: وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِاللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا كِرَامًا “And those who do not witness falsehood, and when they pass by ill speech, they pass by with dignity.” (Qur’an 25:72) Abu al-‘Aliyah, Tawus, Ibn Sirin and others said this falsehood is the festivals of the polytheists.
