i’m a mortician. whenever i watch a dematting, i always think of this one younger woman i worked on. she had beautiful, long, bright blue hair. she had obviously been in the hospital for a while and was completely matted in the back. a few older male embalmers said they would just cut it short. i asked if i could work on it for a while (i used to style wigs so i know how to dematte to an extent). i spent 3 hours getting every matte i could out. i ended up having to cut a little bit out, but i was able to keep the length. hair is important. it’s a part of our identity. i never met the family, but i am glad that i was able to make her look a little more like herself.

I had horrible matted hair when I was like 11, I had curly hair and hated brushing it. Thankfully this nice girl that I knew spent several hours dematting it for me, my mom threatened to shave it all off if I kept it like that so I’m so thankful to that girl

The back of my head turned into a pancake shaped mat during 20 days in the hospital. I'm blessed because my caregiver used to be a hairdresser. She dematted me when I got home.
