We also thrifted this set with an exploded battery - ours doesn’t work 😭 but my girl still loves playing with this one because of all the other features!

Add a piece of aluminum foil to the end of the batteries. It’s worked for our old toys

Once you get the battery out use white vinegar or 90% rubbing alcohol and Q tips ! It works really well to get rid of corrosion. I’ve salvaged a bunch of my thrifted little people sets that way .
