In May 2025, Avlani, an Indian spent over seven hours in Target off some tags of the items in her shopping cart, and repeatedly neared the first exit doors. Employees began monitoring her because of her unusually long stay, and called the police, who questioned her before handcuffing her. The store was in Schaumberg, Illinois, about 30 miles from Chicago. Avlani kept asking the police why she couldn't "just pay" and leave. "We're way way, way past that. You committed a felony," one of the officers responded. "Are you allowed to steal in India?"
