Self taught here after my husband died. Not sure what Ryobi you have, but they aren’t junk. I have loved my Expandit and now my +one that is a “whisper”. Ryobi has a YouTube channel. I’ve learned to take of to add string as well as threading through. You have to keep on all of the parts.

Where is the guard piece? Also you want to hold it at a 10° angle and move back and forth slowly. I hate it too!

I wear a face shield that can also be pushed up like a visor...its saved my face multiple times

It cuts off when the string is too long . No need to keep the guard on just will need to adjust string when it cuts off
