I confidently said commas, then got confused with the difference between hyphens and dashes

I naturally used dashes a lot when I write, but they’re so common with chatGPT generated text that I hear people are assuming the writing is AI generated! I avoid using them in the thesis now 😭

In my native language dashes can be used interchangeably with commas in these cases, so this was a piece of cake to me haha

In Italy I’ve been taught that double colons should be used in a sentence like that. Was I taught wrong?

This is pretty american English specific though. Everywhere else in the world (where the latin alphabet is used), even in my native language, you would use commas.

I think two en dashes specifically. "Tokyo – the capital of Japan – is one of the largest cities in the world."

Hello! One question. As a linguist, I don’t see how there is only one possible answer to this example. In the Romance languages I know, I would use a comma or an em dash independently in this context (NP apposition). Is there a punctuation convention that regulates this in English?

Spellchecked! I wanted to say "my eyes accustomised to the dark" but it's "become accustomed". Why can I say acclimatised but not a accustomised? 😒

Interesting. I always thought punctuation worked the same in every language, but apparently not.
