The 'I' for intersex did always stand out to me as the only identity in the acronym that was about biology as opposed to identity. Intersex people are marginalized and we need more intersex awareness, but I get what you're saying about it being different

i mean I do think intersex people have a place in the LGBTQ+ community because it's not just about orientation and gender but also about being a minority and not being "the standard" that brings us together? so I'm intersex and I also have been female since birth but I'm still not "the standard woman" if you know what I mean and the experiences I have to face because of that is something that I can share with the LGBTQ+ community! not saying every intersex person necessarily has to feel like they have to belong there but I do think we have a very good place there!

You're describing being cis - being assigned female and identifying as such, without a mismatch, is what cisgender means. Saying "I am female" is identifying as female - that's what that means.

I think the I is for all those intersex people who had corrective surgery when they were young and then growing up didn't identify with the gender they were assigned at the surgery, so found themselves in a more 'trans' situation that what you may have experienced

I'm part of the LGBTQ+ community myself and always want to learn everything I can and to be a good ally for every letter of the community. Is there anything in particular you think queer people could do for the intersex community? I always include them in things I make about the queer community, although I know there are many who do not identify as LGBTQ+, as you yourself also stated. 💛💜

So confusing for people but have to tell you firm believer pedi transgender community should wait till 21 to allow surgical changes to body. And like for you surg procedure should have been at consensual age for informed concent

It has been 25 years or so and the world has changed a lot, but I never forget meeting Sharon. Sharon was intersex, dressed as a woman but had a masculine jaw. In her experience the gay and lesbian community was not welcoming to her and saw her as trans(which she was not) who were also not accepted by that community at that time. I think attitudes have largely changed but I was surprised to hear this. I have since encountered racism and even neo-fascist ideas in that community and you just assume that minority groups would automatically be more tolerant, but really they have the breadth of silly prejudices of everybody else. I can understand why some find a home and are embraced there while others do not see it as their community.

would love to dive into this more as I absolutely identify as an intersex female. however being CAIS means I am not binary and I am in the community that has dealt with gender identity issues as I battled them my entire life. I spent 3 decades thinking I'd make a man gay for kissing me.

As a queer woman, I think this is so valid! I understand why it might be hard to relate to others in a queer space as a straight intersex woman. You’re always welcome if you’d like to be, but it’s okay to not feel like that’s your space!
