@doctor.bayo: Teddi Mellencamp opens up about the powerful lessons from her ongoing Stage 4 melanoma battle, after cancer spread to her brain and lungs. #stitch with @People Magazine @Teddimellencamp Key takeaways to know: • Trust your instincts about changes in your body • •Don't hesitate to seek a second medical opinion • Be an active participant in your healthcare
My mom dx with malenoma when pregnant with me. Found again when I was 16. She was misdiagnosed with all sorts of things in between (including lupus) until speck tumors in her brain and a golfball size tumor on her heart were found. She died 9 mo later (I was 24, she was 50).

Doctors so often minimize women's health concerns. Thanks for doing this video.

Great advice! As a provider, sometimes it’s genuinely hard to distinguish when a patient has a minor concern they just want reassurance on vs something they’re really concerned about. When they speak up or double down on their complaint that often spurs me to do more and gives me better insight.

Also - bring someone with you to your appointments. Studies show you’re more likely to be listened to if you have someone with you. But from personal experience, choose carefully. N my younger years I was 100% dismissed bc of my mother. I had a non functioning and necrosing gall bladder I’d suffered from for FIVE YEARS bc of her telling doctors I was anxious and needed an antaci. Also - recent studies show that women are less likely to be taken seriously if you come in looking like a homeless heifer but don’t look toooo good bc if they also won’t take you seriously if you come in wearing a full face of makeup and well pressed.
