Yes, the U.S. government has built extensive underground facilities, some of which are described as being like "cities" due to their size and self-sufficiency. During the Cold War, the U.S. government invested heavily in creating a network of hardened underground bunkers and command centers to ensure the continuation of government operations in the event of a nuclear attack. One of the most well-known examples is the Raven Rock Mountain Complex in Pennsylvania, sometimes called the "Underground Pentagon". It was built to serve as an alternative headquarters for the Pentagon and can house thousands of government officials, equipped with its own power, water, air filtration, dining facilities, and even amenities like a post office and chapel. Another example is the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center in Virginia, a Continuity of Government facility operated by FEMA. It includes a hospital, crematorium, dining and recreation areas, sleeping quarters, water reservoirs, an emergency power plant, and even a radio and television studio. A now declassified example is the Greenbrier Bunker, known as "Project Greek Island". This bunker, located beneath the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, was built to shelter the entire U.S. Congress during a nuclear attack. It remained secret for over 30 years until its existence was revealed by The Washington Post in 1992. These facilities were part of the broader Continuity of Government (COG) plan, designed to maintain essential government functions during a major emergency.

So, let me get this straight: the wealthiest and most powerful people will be all that's left of humanity. In other words, the worst of humanity is what will remain to fend for themselves because most of them have never truly worked a day in their lives. They amassed wealth by exploiting people and resources of the rest of humanity which is now gone. Basically, left to themselves....they'll EAT each other. Basically they spent trillions to slightly prolong the extinction of the human race (which they probably helped start in the first place trying to amass more wealth).
