I had a psychiatrist, not psychologist, refuse to tell me what my diagnosis is "for my own pleasure and validation," with a sneering smirk before informing me that my whole problem was not accepting donald trump as my personal messiah and rolling his eyes when I walked out. I'm sorry, I don't trust mental health professionals anymore. I've had countless abusive experiences with pretty much all of them.

I am a therapist. Usually if someone is asking questions about politics I will redirect them to another therapist. I am very comfortable with talking about these things in most situations, however, my therapy style is person centered. I am taking your positions to help you. After explaining that, if these things are a deal breaker one way or another, the deal is already broken unfortunately.

I posted on my local fb group that I was looking for a therapist that didn’t vote for trump and the amount of old people so up in arms because that “shouldn’t matter” was crazy…why would I want advice from someone I don’t even share the same morals with!?

Therapist here: I agree with all of this. My niche is victims of narcissists so I see it as especially important that my clients know that I would not vote for an oppressor. I’m very out with it when I’m asked. I’ll be honest though, if a client asked if I’m sick of them, I will probably dance around it. lol

I live in a big red state and it took so long to get someone to answer the politics question. I stopped asking bc I am a poli sci degree so I can figure it out with a few other questions pretty well haha

I understand why the political question is pertinent for many. At the same time, with the level of divisiveness in our nation this particular disclosure could be unsafe for the provider in certain areas. As much as clients deserve to be safe, so do we.
