@baxum: @TNF is wrong and has made a physics mistake. Now this is very complicated physics and I do not fault him at all, but he was mixing up a linear force as the force done on your muscles when in reality they experience a torque about a joint. Still one of my favorite creators, and if he wants to talk/debate this I'd be more than happy too (but I am very confident he is wrong). He is also not the only creator to get this wrong, I saw many others blindly follow him. I let this ride for a bit to see who all would and am glad I did, many that have called me a brainless clone of his are the ones that blindly followed. #gym #Fitness #tnf #natty
Fr THIS is how you attempt to disprove something. You didn't attack his character at all and you invited a counterargument. Great job.

a way to describe it is: no matter where the handle is placed, the machine will still have the same rotational force output. Since torque is force multiplied by distance, if the machine is applying a force twice the magnitude at half the distance, the pec is experiencing the same rotational force as the original force at the original length. This essentially means that the distance has zero effect on torque at the shoulder joint.

So if you want to move the handles at constant angular velocity (or tangential) you need to exert torque on the handles equal to the torque the handles exert on your hands. That means r1f1 = r2f2, where r1 always = r2 by definition, and thus f1=f2. By shortening the grip, we reduce r1 and r2 by an equal constant factor, but the force f1 and f2 are unchanged. Thus, by changing grip location, it doesnt actually get any harder. However, your point about the effects of putting the handles at the elbow causing pain and taking out the biceps is worth considering

If it didn’t click for you : leverage doesn’t matter here because it’s the shoulders that’s working and leverage is only relevant when the force is applied at the endpoint of the lever. it’s solely the shoulder that’s producing force so no you’re not doing anything by getting it closer. It’s like having a long torque but turning it at the base you’re not leveraging the lenght of the arm.

You’re forgetting the fact that pec dec also has 2 axis of rotation (terminology might be wrong). While the pec dec’s MA on you remains the same, the other pivot point (the one that runs vertical) can change mechanical advantage. With a more flexed one like with the elbows, there’s less mechanical advantage while with a more extended one, there’s more. It’s the same reason why when we unrack pec dec, we typically extend it all the way out then rotate
