@eriksinger513: All native-speaker accents and dialects are created equal. This isn’t an opinion, it's what we know to be the case from linguistics, the scientific study of language. Native speaker accents and dialects are all equally "correct"—"correctness", when it comes to comparing them, is just a matter of social prestige. #accents #dialects #linguistics #language #linguisticequality #accentbias #linguisticdiscrimination

When I realized that the reason I didn’t like “axe” was based in racism, I had to do a lot of re-examining, which I’m very thankful for

Thank you!!!! Linguistic prescriptivism is the tool of the elite to designate certain groups of people as unintelligent and less worthy of respect.

I use both pronunciations of “either.” It’s situational. Grew up in Georgia, child of two Texans.

if youre able to correct them, you probably understood what they said. shared understanding is the fundamental goal of language. if you understand them, they said it correctly

your attitude is so brilliant, i wish the way people taught english wasn't so derogatory to accents and dialects. the way everyone speaks is beautiful and variable! pidgin and aave and more are real, nuanced ways of speaking!

Is it weird that I've realized I pronounce either/neither both ways depending on the context? It turns out, it's like preposition phrases that you just know by rote. "Ee-ther you do or you don't" "Eye-ther you're with me or against me." For the record, I'm from Southeastern Mass. My father had an accent sort of like what people parody for Boston. (It actually varies a lot by town & ethnicity.) My mother's father was born in 1885, so she had an older, educated "Yankee" accent

Thank you! Some bird species even have regional accents, and it doesn't make them sound less sweet. The beauty of language is that it's alive and changing!

God this is SO refreshing to see. I cannot stand these posts about what is "correct" and "incorrect". If I see another "improper" grammar or pronunciation post I’m going to lose it. It's SO disheartening!!!

I never realized that the "ai" pronunciation of either is so uncommon in America. I've always used both pronunciations fairly interchangeably

When you talk of “American and English English” as the main variants with “Ireland, Scotland, and New Zealand” as the others, you are ignoring (accidentally, I hope) the far more numerous English speakers of South Asia and Africa. It seems like there is an unspoken rule that these variants are necessarily wrong when they don’t match the pronunciation of their former colonial masters or the version propagated more recently by American global media organizations. You may not have intended that but the omission stood out to me.

Hell, I’d extend the idea that non-native speakers’ pronunciation can still be considered correct if they’re still intelligible. Especially considering those “intelligible mispronunciations” can lead to dialectical markers in second (and later) generation native speakers
