Back in the 80s Gorbachev was lived by the Soviets, he was elected with 95% of the vote . In the 90s he was hated for the collapse of the USSR. I can see the same thing for Putin, once he is gone he will be hated by Russians and blamed for the failed invasion to Ukraine
