@inspiraggio: A woman sits alone, cradling what appears to be a baby. But it isn’t a child—it’s a wooden log, wrapped like something sacred. Is she mourning the loss of a child? Or has her mind been broken by the desperate longing for one? The artist gives us no answer. We’re left to face her pain, without a clear explanation. The intensity of her anguish reflects the Romantic spirit of the time—where madness, grief, and death were central themes. But they often hinted at something larger than the individual. Merle painted The Lunatic of Étretat in 1872, just after France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Could this image of personal collapse reflect the national mood of despair and political loss?
