Institutions in Germany are very unprofessional as perceived by Anglo centric cultures

I'm German and don't understand how asking questions might be considered "talking back" 💔

So freedom of speech doesn't apply to minors? Gotcha.

Respect is earned not demanded with seniority. I respect you if you respect me. That means I need to be able to talk back saying my opinion

Sorry but no,as a German it is absolutely okay to express your opinion to an adult if you are a Child or teenager and respect is earned not given no matter if it’s an adult or not that they’re talking to and if they can’t handle having a real human conversation and disagreement with a teenager then they shouldn’t be Host Parents,I would never just hold back my opinion just because someone is older than me,Teenagers and Children are people, not property

I took a bike to school sometims, I did that in Germany all the time. In the US where I lived, it was seen as odd, nobody biked anywhere. I stopped doing that, because the roads were too dangerous for bikers.

Honest question; why is it bad to talk about things that seem unfair? In my experience it’s mostly a lack of communication. The older person sets up a rule that the younger person doesn’t understand, so why not just simply give your reasons?

That ain't a cultural difference, that is straight up a violation of the child's right to dignity. The United States have not ratified UNCRC, btw.

Germans are taught that they can disagree if they voice their concern in a polite, respectful manner. „Der Ton macht die Musik“ (lit.: the tone makes the music). And they kinda expect the same in the country of free speech 🥲 So it’s helpful to explain it to them from the get go. Really not their fault.

the comments "coming for you" are just weird bc you don't say what is right or wrong, just what is DIFFERENT in the two cultures. and it's helpful to know that

We have hosted 8 exchange students and we treat them as young adults, we let them ask questions and “talk back” so they can learn. I think many things you mentioned we have dealt with with all our boys, but we built on them asking questions to learn

My partner did a year in high school and he was so confused about curfews and general restrictions (I.e. you have to be home for dinner every night)- in Germany he never had these types of rules

Also, the Germans love fresh air, not air-conditioning. Our German girl always threw her bedroom windows open, even when we had the AC going. But we adored her and 15 years later, we still see her every year, sometimes twice. Such an incredible experience with her.
