It’s a matter of Aramaic and Greek. Bar in Matthew means “son of” in Aramaic and just son of John in John 1 is from the Greek.

They could be alternate names. John may have been short for Jonah in those days. 🥰 That's my understanding anyway.

It’s a reflection of each of their personal accounts with Jesus. They each heard those conversations

Translation from aramaic to English (more accurate) has son of Jonah in both verses. John 1:42: And he brought him unto Jesus and Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simeon, the son of Jonah, you will be called ‘Kepha (The Rock}!” Matthew 16:17: Jesus answered and said unto him, “Blessed are you Simeon, the son of Jonah, because flesh and blood hasn’t revealed this unto you, but rather, My Father, who is in the the Heavens.

I read from a Messianic Jew that because it was the Holy Spirit (dove) that revealed to Peter that Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus referres to Peter as “Barjona”.

Iona is Jonah and Ioannou is John. Both sound very similar, so maybe an error of the writer of these books.

John 1:42 Jesus changed Simon’s name to Cephas to signify a new role and new identity for Simon. The name change signifies a deeper spiritual transformation-highlighting Simon’s future role as a leader. New name , new role. Matthew16:17 Jesus is asking who people say he is and then he asks his disciples who they think he is. Peter is the first to confess that he is the Christ, Son of the living God. Jesus responds: Blessed are you Simon Bar-Jonah- this name emphasizes that Peter’s understanding came from God not human source, highlighting Peter’s spiritual and divine revelation and his understanding of Jesus’ identity. 2 different scriptures-2 different meanings. I pray this helps 🙏🏼 God bless you

The Bible often skips generations
In genealogies, ben or bar can skip over fathers to grandfathers or even further...
In 2 Samuel 9:3...Mephibosheth is called “the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul,” but Saul is technically his grandfather...
Matthew 1 compresses genealogies, calling someone “son of” even when multiple generations are skipped.
