Jo ✨Interiors & Lifestyle :
I watched this when it originally aired and remember feeling sad that her work was being mocked, so disrespectful!

The main problem is Sue Lawley, the show’s host. Patronising and rude. She was also incredibly rude to the genius pianist, John Ogdon when he was on the show. 😡

Wogan was for smoothbrain, pedestrian housewives and their beige husbands. Westwood knew exactly how this would go down and it was for the juxtaposition with her appreciative fans. Punk aesthetic tailored for prime time BBC.

this is so painful to watch. I'm glad she became so iconic and her designs are absolutely stunning but, I would've cried.

I actually think it’s incredibly ignorant of the audience to laugh at the beautiful designs . If I was Vivienne Westwood I would have walked off . I very much think if Mr Terry Wogan was there then he would not have let the Audience behave in that behaviour.

you've got to remember how outrageous that would have looked at the time the audience were actually being encouraged to laugh and the demographic of the viewers was very traditional middle England no surprise at all

There is an Alan Partridge episode where they send this up. This interview cemented Westwood in the hearts and minds of the nations teenagers, and we grew up buying her clothes! A year or so after this interview, Westwood did a line for Freeman's catalogue, and that's how I got my first pieces when I was 16!

The audience on the Sue Lawley show were of a certain age & demographic the same audience as the ‘Terry Wogan show’. I do remember watching this I was at University at the time.

But we are talking about GM tv. It’s the equivalent of tabloid readers.

Alan Partridge replicated this interview and I had no idea that he’d taken inspiration from Wogan !

I remember watching this at the time, I couldn't believe how rude the audience was being laughing at her. Vivienne was always ahead of her time, sadly this audience just didn't get it.

I remember this coming out and it was such a time of generational divide, it was exciting, you had a real feeling of avant garde, Malcom McClaren was everywhere, and there were the clodhoppers who like on this show would laugh at anything different and simply not get it and the ones who did. It was a movement and frankly I think Vivienne knew what she was doing, there was never going to a different response and we were laughing at the lo

Only thing laughable about this is the audience, where it's highly likely not a single one of them ever went on to create anything anywhere near as genius as Vivienne. These designs are stunning! And the fact Michael Clark is modeling makes this even better. The audience were in the presence of greatness, and they were too arrogant to even notice.

I was born after this, but didn't know about this. this is absolutely wild. she because so respected & so many people wear her designs now (especially shoes & bags!) this just shows how subjective art is. I also wonder how many of the people laughing decided they wanted to own pieces after she became well known
