@speedifylive: Why Apple’s kernel security still beats Microsoft 1 year after CrowdStrike: In July 2024, a massive CrowdStrike update triggered a critical bug that crashed over 8 million Windows PCs into Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) loops, grounding more than 7,000 flights and causing global disruption. But this wasn’t just a one-off software failure. It revealed a deeper vulnerability in how Windows handles kernel-level access compared to macOS. Why did this happen on Windows but not on Mac? The answer lies in how Apple uses DriverKit to block third-party software from injecting code into the Mac kernel, reducing the risk of system-wide crashes from security apps. Meanwhile, Windows still allows deep kernel access to third-party tools like antivirus software, including Microsoft’s own Windows Defender. So why doesn’t Microsoft adopt Apple’s model? The answer: antitrust law. Because Microsoft ships its own cybersecurity tools inside Windows, the EU and other regulators prevent the company from locking down the kernel. Otherwise, it would give Microsoft an unfair advantage. In this video, we break down the technical and legal reasons behind this major security design difference between Windows and Mac. #technology #cybersecurity #technews #windows #microsoft #apple #techtok

Apple has no drivers because they don't support 3rd party hardware 😂

So if your WiFi controller fails, I guess we just throw the computer away? Wild.

it's not only antitrust concerns, it's also a vastly smaller range of hardware, and other factors

No one has written a Wi-Fi drivers because why would you need a Wi-Fi dongle? Every Apple product has Wi-Fi.

not entirely true, lockdown mode is optional. malware already on the system can spoof lockdown behavior while still having control of the kernel

Do you think an outage the scale of the Crowdstrike crash could happen again in the future?

They also purposely brick your computer because of their Secure Enclave but you didn’t hear that from me. So secure you need a new logic board 😳

Market share doesn’t determine if you put drivers in user space or kernel space. You can still write drivers - but they don’t run in kernel space with privilege to destroy your computer and steal your data.

THe EU is going to ruin this soon enough. Either Aplle stops selling their stuff in the EU or they open it up. Sad, but true. Apple magic is incompatible with EU bureaucracy. Who would have thought.

You can thank the EU for having a windows back door for 3rd party driver integration.

Mac's kernel was always safer, so is the Linux kernel, both are open source, window's Kernel isn't, see a trend?

Why are Apple able to technically do it when Microsoft can? Because they control the whole stack: hardware + software. Only Apple is capable of providing this level of isolation at the OS level due to tightly

As I recall, windows NT was based on the Carnegie-Mellon mach Unix kernel, which MS engineers destroyed the security by building hooks into it, and that was the foundation of today's windows.

You are speaking partially true. USB WiFi cards work just fine. Many devices work just fine. Mostly macOS has driver itself, but it doesn’t mean that if there is no driver for something, it will not work for Mac, PnP devices usually work just fine.

There's a significant vulnerability within the security enclave of Apple devices, affecting all platforms. This flaw was introduced with Apple's creation of the T1 and T2 security chips, later fully integrated into Apple Silicon. This particular vulnerability has eluded detection by numerous security researchers and even Apple's internal security team; it represents a fundamental blind spot. I can offer only a hint: the attack vector that allows for total remote code execution is linked to the macOS upgrade infrastructure.
