@reeceisrandom: Here's why telling your boss 'I have ADHD' backfires every time (and the strategy that actually works)... You sit down with your boss, ready to finally explain why you work differently "I have ADHD, which means I need different strategies to manage focus..." And they hit you with: "We all get distracted sometimes. Have you tried making lists?" The issue is that you're speaking ADHD, and all they're hearing are excuses. You explain neurological differences. They hear "can't focus." You mention accommodation needs. They think "high maintenance." After working with hundreds of people who work in corporate with ADHD… I've learned that the ones who get understanding and support don't educate their bosses about ADHD. They translate their needs into business language: ❌ "I have ADHD and get distracted easily" ✅ "I'm most productive with uninterrupted deep work blocks" ❌ "I hyperfocus and lose track of time" ✅ "I do my best work when I can dive deep into projects with clear deadlines" ❌ "My ADHD makes meetings hard" ✅ "I contribute best when I can review agendas beforehand" Same needs. Different positioning. Completely different response. Your boss doesn't need to understand your brain chemistry. They need to understand your work style. Look, you shouldn't have to hide who you are to succeed at work. But you also shouldn't have to give your boss a neuroscience lesson just to get what you need. There's a middle ground where you can advocate for yourself authentically while speaking a language they actually understand and can act on. DM me COACH and I'll show you exactly how to get your boss to “get it” without the awkward conversations that go nowhere.

Not just offices. Friends and family who don’t get it just assume it’s laziness-_- Thank you for the examples of communicating better with said people.

Fortunately my supervisor and my mgr are both ADHD. So when I go to them with a 1000 mile and hour brain they understand.

Can you make an edit that stops when you say this conversation happens in offices all across America so I can share this with my team? It’s gold

I appreciate all your videos. I appreciate the help with how to communicate. This question isn't in regard to your videos or message, it's for those neurotypical workers. Why can't they learn at least some of our language? Or our patterns?

I sat down with my new boss day 1 and told him about my ADHD. I've gone to him when my meds wore out and I was going to be useless that day. I've also bounced into his office, infodumped, and bounced out without him saying a word. He gets it. He accommodates and appreciates me. I'm extremely grateful.

...yeah... but how do you tell them "listen, I know I'm appreciated for my work ethic and I know you keep encouraging me to seek promotions, but I know that if I seek out promotions, that the responsibilities of those roles come with expectations that would force me to take on projects that I definitely know I'm capable of, but would most DEFINITELY send me into extended periods of burnout and would rob me of my mental capacity to adequately show up for kid, as a single parent, and thus force me into just another never ending over-compensating loop of feeling like I'm forever trying to prove myself at my job, while constantly sacrificing my capacity to be a decent parent" ... so, forgive me if I respectfully decline the additional responsibilities that you acknowledge I for have the ability to perform... but I'd honestly just do better if you just stfu and trust that 9 times out of 10, I know how to do my job better than you (though I'm not an a-hole and trust that I'm open to constructive criticism) but just give me my assignment, your expected outcome, and just trust that I'll ask questions if I think I need to. I'm not trying to be a 🍆... but in my 38 years of living and job experiences across a multitude of different work environments... (once we get past the phase of me "proving myself" and my ability to connect how what I learned other jobs benefits how I logically process things in my current environment...) just give me the directive and then let me be. I'm not trying to be an a**hole... and I'm a people pleaser at heart... but sometimes, it's like "OMG... I know more than you. leave me alone... respectfully 😅"
