Lately, I think many of my pots have carried a little too much metallic speckling, mostly from copper and iron. When I am aiming for a more pared back surface, with only the lightest scattering of molten spots, I sprinkle a very small amount over a larger block of clay and wedge it in slowly to disperse the flecks.   Some of the particles remain buried within the clay once fired and others are trimmed away at the leather hard stage, thus with this level of dilution in stoneware, the final effect should remain subtle. If you would like to see what these additions do in practice, there are a few recent videos and photographs that show the results more clearly.   This is my first session back at the wheel after a long break and it always feels unfamiliar. I had not thrown for a month and with a spare hour after all my parcels from my recent online restock were collected, I made a board of bowls. The knowledge is there, but for the first day my mind tends to move ahead of my hands and part of returning to the rhythm is simply allowing the two to fall back into step, which isn’t something I can force.   These bowls are thrown with a soft curve for now, with the walls left slightly heavy. Once they reach leather hard, they will be trimmed back to create a more angular exterior and raised on tall feet. The pedestal foot is useful because it requires a thick mass of clay to be left at the base. I intentionally leave more than I need instead of throwing the foot to its final form straight away, I keep the base substantial so that I can press into the excess stoneware and lift the piece cleanly from the wheel. The excess that’s left also only takes a moment to trim back and, on the whole, with particular shape especially, I’d rather have too much material to work with as compared to too little.   #satisfying #handmade #wheelthrownpottery #contemporaryceramics
