Michael, a sweet brown dog with short, stubby legs, caught my attention with his big brown eyes and eager demeanor. Despite the chaos around him, Michael seemed to radiate a sense of hope and enthusiasm. As I approached his kennel, Michael eagerly greeted me, his ears perked up and his face alight with excitement. I spent some time with him, getting to know his quirks and personality. But despite his adorable nature, I knew Michael was facing a dire fate: he’s scheduled for euthanasia due to growling and lunging at other dogs. I believe that shelter assessments should always be taken into consideration however, they may not always be fair, as the shelter environment can bring out the worst in dogs. The constant noise, lack of exercise, and uncertainty can be incredibly stressful for dogs, leading them to exhibit behaviors they wouldn’t normally display in a more calm and comfortable setting. What’s even more heartbreaking is that Michael has only been off stray hold for one day, and he is already scheduled to be euthanized. It’s devastating to think that he may not get the chance to show his true personality outside of the stressful shelter environment. I made a promise to Michael: I would do everything in my power to help him find a second chance at life.
