I developed a bunion as a teenager that has progressed. Now I suspect I have plantar fasciitis. A shoe with any amount of elevation from heel to toe kills my bunion. My foot measures 4.5 inches at its widest point. I absolutely cannot wear anything that puts any amount of pressure on the bunion. They simply do not make a closed-toe shoe that is wide enough and with support that doesn't hurt one area of my foot or the other. My foot is pronating and turning inward while my big toe is pushing outward into my other toes and I have to put effort into walking with it straight or my knee will start hurting. 3 different podiatrists and the best I've gotten are "custom" insoles that are inches narrower than my foot and inserts/padding that just add girth and compression to my already wide foot. It has taken running and hiking, shopping with my daughters, and pretty dresses with cute shoes away from me. I'm only 42.
