My Personal theory is that gaster is supposed to be the ultimate personification of consciousness within a video game and in doing so is a being that was blasted from another plane of existence into another, the whole consciousness thing comes from the fact that Toby tried and failed to created a lines of code in undertale that would automatically delete the game
