I recently went out for dinner with an old friend who had a difficult past few years. I could tell that his religious beliefs were the only things holding him together, so I just listened sympathetically.

I also believe a lot of people lack an internal moral compass. The only thing keeping them from lying, cheating, and stealing is their religion. Taking that away from them would be bad for society at large.

1. Even if individuals “do better” with religion, society as a whole is worse with it. 2. The answer is not to continue to aid and abet religion but, instead, to improve secular society so that people no longer turn to religion.

Atheists don’t care if you want a religion. We just want you to have one that isn’t hateful, isn’t oppressive, and that doesn’t impact everyone that doesn’t believe in the same one in a negative manner.

Religion is the most reliable way to ensure morality in a large populace. It becomes a self policing system of social pressure. Basically a 'broken windows' theory in reverse. The problem is not all religions have the same morality; it begins to break down in non-homogonized societies.

China, France, Japan and Australia are doing pretty well with growing Athiest populations. I agree that decent healthcare and social services are key. Not to be rude, but people who aren't intelligent seem to thrive and need religion the most.

I think a lot more people would be horrible people without religion. I genuinely think some people are only somewhat okay humans cause they think it will get them to heaven (or whatever alternative their religion has)

An atheist believes in being a good person A religious person believes in aspiring to get a reward or avoid a punishment through being a good person. Could you imagine if they suddenly don't have a reason to be a good person?
