yeah, engaging with fanfic via kudos and comments is specifically a prosocial behavior that boosts community - and psychologically speaking, prosocial behavior expects reciprocity to foster belonging and reinforce repeat behaviors (ie, making more fan content) by giving a motivator (ie, good feelings from receiving comments). It's of course not the only reason people should be engaging with fics, but the amount of people who say "readers don't owe writers anything" is kinda crazy. I don't disagree with your point and I don't think a capitalism metaphor is wrong or takes away from your point, but I just want to add that it's prosocial bx, and reciprocity (ie, actually engaging with fics, not just reading them and then unliking them when you're done) is also prosocial bx that builds a community, in terms of psychology

Fandom is built on community engagement, it makes me sad that a lot of people don’t understand that. Engagement is what gets people to be excited about the work they’re sharing.

If I was inlove with a fandom & wanted to discuss that with the author of a fic I would use the comments to do that but it may not always be positive.

As a fic writer, I write for myself. I SHARE however in order to interact with my fandom and build community. I’ll still write if it’s silent, but I won’t post and share it if I feel like no one wants to indulge themselves in my stories.

imma be honest. i write for myself, i post it for comments. if i dont get comments, ill just stop posting. comments are quite literally the only difference posting & not posting has to me, and if that difference is gone, why waste my time figuring out summaries or titles or tags or fixing the formatting & all that jazz.

I hate the rhetoric "readers don't owe writers anything" because writers also don't owe readers anything. We don't owe you another chapter. See how discouraging that mindset is? see how that makes the writers feel? yes, it's a give and take, but one on good faith and its mean to be encouraging and gratifying for BOTH parties otherwise why share/posy a fic to begin with?

I have 417 posted fics and over 1.2 million words on AO3 alone. It’s honestly pretty discouraging to see “write for yourself” constantly thrown around and to be talked down to by other people in community (not you) when that’s what I consistently do and any peep of complaint about lack of interaction is met with “you don’t appreciate your readers.” If I didn’t appreciate them, I could simply stop posting. I appreciate the comments that I get and ngl, those fandoms are the ones I’m willing to put more “effort” into for *posting* for. Because I can write for myself and keep it to the hard drive.

Genuinely going on hiatus because I emotionally can't handle the drop off of engagement since the hype around anime/manga died down. I've felt sooo guilty for feeling heartbroken about it. But these videos have made me feel a lot more understood. Commenting, excitement and community is the only currency we ask for, truly. So you don't want your fic to be abandoned? Don't abandon your authors.

I have made some of the best friendships in my life in fandom by writing fic and engaging with other writers and readers. I still write with a friend I met who commented on a fic I was working on when I was pregnant with my kid who just graduated high school. Reach out! Engage! Not just to get more fic or art but to have friends around you that get what you love! People talk about how we all need to build community now but won’t do the basic steps to do that!

I put so much effort sometimes into the things I tell certain authors, that I take breaks from reading their works so I don't overwhelm either of us. and yes, that's not all authors but I do try to at least leave a thank you and great job for most. the emotions I received from reading should be equally felt in appreciation, which is impossible, so trying is the next step.

Writer here- I will TAKE comments and interaction as payment if the only other option is writing into the void. I just finished positing a 63 part long series, weekly updates and mu regular commenters have been what made the experience worth it.

I think another thing is that there's an idea that fanfic is easy and low effort, so its not worth praise or engagement. I work incredibly hard on what I write. it takes effort and commitment on my part. but thats not reciprocated even with the very simple methods of engagement that the website provides.

Honestly though, isn't interacting with people who share your interests one of the best parts of being in a fandom? Like, yeah, I write my fics purely for my own pleasure and only share them because it costs me nothing to do that, but I just LOVE discussing stuff with ppl who decide to comment - and it doesn't even have to be about my fics specifically, sometimes it just turns into a long talk about the og work, the characters, the tropes, everything. I met some of my best buddies through commenting on fanfics, and I just don't get why ppl have such an aversion to interacting with each other in fandoms nowadays 😅

There is a fanfic series where I started to write funny skits in the comment section based on events within a chapter. Now...seven years later, me and 4ish other like-minded ppl are still making skits (with their own lore & sagas!) within the comment section of this one ongoing fanfic series. THAT is f*ck awesome community!

As a writer that almost never post, and an avid reader, comments matter. Even comments on finished, years old, works. It makes me remember my old stories and how great it was to write them and create a community around them. As a reader, I usually comment once or twice on a complete work, if it's a very long one probably more, but on a wip I comment on every new chapter bc I know how much it means to get a response in order to keep posting.

I honestly can't understand why people treat comments like something they need to spare. 80 people are subscribed to my story, over 160 kudos, over 500 hits per chapter and all I get is two comments quote "Love it" or "Keep it up". Not that I'm not grateful for getting at least those but a little bit more engagement would be nice or else the chapters will start appearing not once a week but every two 🤷♀️Then every month.... I have it written it won't run

I remember fandom in 00s where fic was integrated into fandom so much more and was a way to engage in community and socialize. It was a big give and take, and I think efforts like Big Bangs show that.

That’s what I love about older fandoms that maybe don’t have as many new works coming out, and with fans that’ve been around a long time, you still tend to get great interaction on fics. I’ve recently started a fic in an older fandom and I’ve never had so much interaction before and it’s such a massive boost and makes me wanna get more out for the readers.

As soon as I heard about chapter/comment Kudos I was so happy as a reader. I was always so self conscious about what to comment because EVERYTHING felt like I was demanding more. I’m just happy to be here and that felt like a good way to start. I’m more engaged now but I mentally needed that in.

If I think about leaving comments as “interacting with my peers” I will 100% be upset when they don’t interact back. Using metaphors of comments and kudos being “payment” makes more sense. The author already spent hours and hours producing something that they kindly shared for me to read for free. There are always obligations in society, telling someone you liked a gift they gave you is one of them.
