@davis_aminah: To be black in Charleston, SC - if you don’t wanna watch, that’s fine. But this is for the people who care. I didn’t articulate myself super well in this and there is so much more that I could say. But I just needed to get the conversation started. . . . #fyp #charleston #black #blacklives
Everything you’re saying is spot on! The whitewashing of Charleston history and culture is disgraceful. To not acknowledge that this city was literally built on the backs of enslaved people is just flat out wrong and now fast forward to not wanting to embrace what the descendants of those people bring to Charleston culture is willful ignorance. I am always trying to learn and understand more from POC so that I can continue to do better.

yup. the “beautification” of Charleston bothers me. the history is so important and peoples lack of understanding & learning is why this continues to happen.

Thank you for sharing this. I’ve found Charleston a very difficult place to live and I’ve lived in many places. Not because of the poverty or homelessness, but because of the obvious racism that still exists.

Why do they keep attacking the kids selling palmetto roses? They are always polite and I buy them often.

I’m telling you it starts in the schools here and our schools are VERY segregated. It’s actually appalling.

it’s a tale as old as time! charleston (& sc in general) is a beautiful place and i have loved growing up here. but for black people, it really is not (and never has been) the utopia that influencers make it out to be.

I’m sorry Charleston has so much hatred still I moved here a few months ago from Chicago where I grew up with mostly black people. Now I’m understanding why so many black people are stand- offish to me when I approach them with open arms. You just made me see things differently again I’m sorry!!

North Charleston is literally where most pocs live because we've been pushed out of other locations like downtown and mount pleasant. It's starting to get scary and the racism here is definitely loud. The night life in downtown is a prime example of that

The way downtown neighborhoods are slowly and slowly pushing out any and all past cultures that have thrived and grown here.

The statue of John C Calhoun was proudly displayed until 2020! 5 years ago! Blows my mind. Racism runs deep in Charleston, unfortunately.

They want a diverse Charleston and surrounding area but gentrified. The downtown nightlife struck me very racist since the last year or so and I’m a native. It’s scary being a POC and you’re clearly outnumbered with like minded people. I’m considered light for a Hispanic but as of lately this is the most in my life I’ve ever been asked if I’m an English speaker. Which we all know is code for something else.

Thank you for bringing attention to this and speaking on this. The video is chilling. I was holding my breath watching it. He was SELLING SWEET GRASS ROSES !!!!!!! Since I have lived here - I always say hello and buy one when I have cash on me because they are always polite and it’s known they are just trying to make money for themselves / family / etc. The entire situation makes me want to scream.

BIG on Charleston could (imo, should) be a beacon for change and a place that is so intolerant of this treatment. Couldn’t imagine this situation with a MINOR had to be handled this way. Police training appears to be out the window when I feel like they should be the top people helping mend the trauma between them and the black community?? I appreciate you sharing your thoughts ❤️❤️❤️

And the part that made me cringe so bad in the video was they were telling him he’s a minor saying he’s a little boy and the cop is like he’s not a little boy. That just speaks to the lens that they see these children.

You absolutely articulated your thoughts well - and you’re so correct about Charleston being a place that should be a beacon for progressive change BECAUSE of its history. So many people turn a blind eye to the history of Charleston and just look at the cute colors or move there and don’t interact with their community/neighbors in any way. It’s a beautiful city but we cannot forget the layers of history there.

I’ve lived here for two years. I went to a new hair salon a couple months ago. During the appt the (white) hairdresser asked me where I’m from & I told her I’m from CT & she then proceeded to claim (she’s never been there before) that CT has a lot of racism, & that racism no longer exists in charleston… I was like first of all, not saying racism doesn’t exist in CT, of course it’s everywhere unfortunately, but CT is extremely diverse in cultures & the state govt also actually cares about all people which is why CT consistently ranks top 10 for quality of life. Second of all, her claiming that racism doesn’t exist in chs was crazy to me! I was flabbergasted, & truly didn’t know what to say. Bc ya I wish that were the case here & everywhere but it’s not. I haven’t lived here that long & even I see that there’s ignorance, lack of cultural diversity, & racism. She was like “I remember a newspaper (or something like that I don’t remember exactly) tried to do a story about how racism is still a big thing here, but then everybody was like ‘no we won’t have that. That doesn’t happen here anymore’ so they didn’t do that story anymore”…I was like ???? It pains me it really does to hear things like that but I know I will never know what it’s like to be you, & Im sorry for the things non-white people have to experience everyday.

Absolutely heartbreaking hearing him screaming for his life. It’s the way these officers don’t even see him as a child. It’s sad that these videos don’t even shock me anymore; praying for that young man and his family.
