@jenniferjettonhood: I LOVE parent training! It’s my favorite part about being a BCBA. I live this life with them everyday and can definitely relate to what they are going through. My parents typically always show up once a week and I truly believe it’s because I always make them feel heard and lead with compassion! 💙 #aba #bcbasoftiktok #bcba #appliedbehavioranalysis #autism #autismawareness #foryou #foryoupage #parenttraining
My kiddos parents are THE BEST. I know my student’s mom struggles a lot with high expectations for her child’s future but I know she’s trying her absolute best. She loves her baby with her entire being and that’s the best thing you could ever ask of someone who is a parent to a child with autism/a disability. We do have other students whose parents are in denial of their diagnosis and doesn’t advocate as hard as they can to get their child proper help but I understand those parents as well, I know insurance and the waitlist is one of the hardest things to get through while dealing with difficult behaviors. All I can say is stay strong mom and dads! We see you!

I love this! Clinicians need to meet the parents were they are at and build from there. I’ve seen so many in survival mode, and it’s so important to be empathetic.

Love the idea of focusing on teaching a parent to utilize ABA strategies to support their own positive behaviors! Engaging in self regulation strategies is something I need support with as a parent too! 😅 Parent collaboration can be so much more meaningful when we’re really listening to what our families need!

As a mom I’m not a professional. I’m just trying to survive between working all night then making sure she goes to therapy, all he needs at home, keeping her safe while trying my best not to neglect my marriage and her siblings needs and feelings and even my own self.

Providers and schools often forget that many parents have their own struggles outside of parenting and communication and compassion work better than judgment.

I agree!! I am an rbt and also a parent of a teen on the spectrum… parents are exhausted the majority of the time they bring their children at the clinic… building rapport with them is crucial.. listening to them and not just superficially listening I am saying hear the unsaid.. they may come in with the smile but on the inside they are breaking 💙

When I was a new BCBA, I was taking over a client from another BCBA and she told me "This parent appears to be difficult to work with, but it's just because she's had to advocate for her kid so much and so hard and hasn't had anyone ask her what would help her the most." Changed my outlook on parent training from then on. So many parents have to fight so hard for their kids and often don't have anyone on their side.

I learned that identifying barriers parents have to participating in treatment and then getting them in touch with specific resources to support them has been the biggest game changer for me. When they feel less overwhelmed by the million things life is throwing at them it’s way easier to collaborate with them! Just like how our kiddos basic needs have to be met before learning can occur, it’s the same with parents.

My parent training goal at the moment is being able to implement BASICS at home with my child to avoid compassion fatigue as I am also an RBT and sometimes come home and I can’t hold it together anymore

I wish we can send them directly to the “BOARDS” because 9 out of 10 BCBA/RBTs are overwhelmed trying to help when we are met with lack of support, participation, or a consistent pay😒😩
