@gigisgardentips: Heard of the penny hack to keep algae out of your birdbath? It can work—but please use the right penny. Pennies made before 1982 are mostly copper, which has natural antimicrobial properties that help slow algae growth. But pennies made after 1982 are mostly zinc, and if they corrode in water, they can release zinc into the birdbath. Even small amounts of zinc can be toxic to birds, leading to metal poisoning. Always check the date before dropping a penny in your birdbath—your birds’ health depends on it! * And yes, I do keep rocks, sticks, or wine corks in my bird bath to prevent insects from drowning. I removed them during the filming of this video. New here? Thank you. Not everyone knows this and just throws in random pennies. They also make a copper disc for bird baths.

You can buy copper you don’t have to use pennies.

The copper is also what makes this trick work, you can throw a tiny piece of copper in and it’ll do the same thing. Or they make copper bird baths :)

The copper fittings by Everbilt at Home Depot are safe as well! I just bought a few for $2 or less each. (The bird bath copper disks on Amazon don’t seem to come from reputable sellers 😞)

Yes, it’s good for short periods of time …You just can’t leave the copper in longer than 8 hours for people, shorter for birds. It becomes toxic…
