We don't "think" of air as nothing, but our EXPECTATIION that something else should be in the box leads us to say "nothing" as a perspective of what we believe is missing from the box. It's a cultural thing.

Super Nerdy Theory Time: in the Star Trek Universe, they've figured out how to detect and separate the matter and antimatter components of Virtual Particle Pairs (similar to Hawking Radiation from black holes). The regular matter from these Virtual Particles is manipulated to create things out of Replicators, the antimatter is used to power the Warp Drive.

🤔 So is that what’s beyond the edge of ever expanding space, is it actually nothing on the other side of the expansion? It stands to reason that it should be, but without light or other senses there it could just be more something. Which I have to say, sounds an awful lot like how “the Oasis” in “Ready Player One” (book at least) explains how if a place wasn’t created by the “creators” of the “game” or by a player space is procedurally generated, that there’s an in game tradition that players at some point fly a “spaceship” out to the edge of what’s currently defined and fly beyond it to have the system generate more expanding the playable gaming area and algorithmically making new space.
