I teach MS here, and I tell kids that I don’t know their friendships and I can’t read their minds, so I have no way to know if it’s truly joking or bullying masked as joking. This means it’s best to leave those comments at the door so there aren’t any misunderstandings that get them in trouble or accidentally enable bullying (both situations I found myself in when I was a rookie teacher).

One time in my 6th grade class a student was sent to the office for punching another student in the mouth. When I asked what happened, all I got was “I said the same exact thing to her yesterday and she thought it was hilarious!” Those prepubescent hormones are nothing to be messed with! 🤣😳

😂😂😂 This past school year I said something similar to one of students about being in my classroom with a 17 year gap. Both my student and my former student got such a laugh out of it.

My students are just so mean to each other… especially their “friends.” I tell them regularly that they need to find better friends and be better friends.

A lot of it is about intent and how it is received. I preach to my students that they NEED to check in with their peers and friends to make sure that they are okay and that no feelings or boundaries were crossed.

My friend kept pressing random buttons on my Chromebook and turn it off my Gimkit (it a academic game if you don’t know) and when my teacher asked why I wasn’t on the Gimkit I told him that my autumn my best friend keeps hitting me and pressing my Chromebook and then he looks at both of us and says how long have you been friends we tell him since kindergarten and then he looks at me and goes then hit her back. I don’t really care what y’all do I was like you’re aware you just gave me permission to hit her right and he’s like yeah she’s been your friend since kindergarten. I really do not care.
