He’s not a fraud. We as the audience just watched him on the side of the protagonist. Griffith’s intentions are clear from the start; win. During the eclipse the only way he saw his dream to continue or to win, was sacrificing his comrades to the Godhand and the apostles. The only difference between before and after the year of torture for the character of Griffith is physically and control. He loses both. His character nor motives do not change. That’s why the scene of him expressing what a true friend to him would be is one of the most impactful scenes in the Golden Age arc. It truly reflects how Griffith views people and most importantly his comrades

Nope. It's FAR more complicated than that. Griffith COULD be seen as a "fraud" at an angle of having this idea that [what gives a person value and makes them "someone important" in the world where human lives mean nothing is the fact that they have "a dream" that they will fight for and do everything for over everything (and everyone) else] and he himself fucking up his own chance at that by valuing his relationship with Guts over it. (The reason for his crashout essentially) It's why he hates Guts so much and blames him for everything, because the actual truth is that he loathes HIMSELF for being "weak" enough to forget his dream bc of this guy. He's a fraud, because he lies to himself about the actual perpetrator for his downfall - his own human connection to another. Oh, and the other reason I can think of as to why you could call him a fraud: His whole "dream" rhetoric is already a lie he doesn't actually believe in. He DOES absolutely see Guts as equal at that time, but isn't able to admit to himself that he doesn't see other people as below him this way anymore. Not the Band of the Hawk. Since the dream of "getting his own kingdom" has been the shining light of salvation in the dark reality they live in, he can't possibly part with that notion. Not consciously, not ever. ...GOD I love this story sm🔥
