I’m aware that working with animals hides and roadkill can be quite a jarring thing to witness. And it really wasnt that long ago that I found it very uncomfortable myself. My perspective on death and animal body parts had be hijacked by pop culture. The only places I saw such things were in horror films, so what I learnt was that DEATH=BAD, DEATH=GROSS. I had no other reference point. I’ve been called Jeffery Dahmer on more than two occasions when posting about stuff like this, and I have compassion for people making those comments. They see death, and their only reference point to draw from is stories about psychopaths and serial killers. I feel its time for us to hold more nuance than that. Which is better, the front of you, or the back of you? Silly question isnt it, you cant have one without the other, they’re a polarity, they imply each other. Life and death are a polarity, to simply call one bad and one good is as silly a previous question I just asked. The western world is addicted to the life end of the polarity and cant bare dealing with the death end. It desperately tries to hold onto life through ignorance and force, creating an unfathomable amount of death in its wake. A culture terrified of death cant hold balance or nuance. A culture who, through reciprocity, meets death in a small amounts frequently, learns to hold the polarity of life and death, and ultimately leave more life in its wake. Dont be fooled, meeting death is part of what it means to return to a reciprocal relationship with earth. For me, being around death helps embody an awareness of your own mortality. Small reminders everyday that I too will die. What a relief, I’ve nothing to hold onto. And now with that weight lifted I can return to my life lighter, ready to serve life, not scared that it will end. Full hide tanning video can be found at the link in my bio. #youarefromhere #life
