My biggest fear with AI is that whoever owns or is in charge the rules can choose the information we receive. That info is often communicated in a fact based manner which I think feeds into misinformation even further.

I realise history suggests the opposite, but I truly believe LLMs are more insidious than any previous technology. They feed our egos. There are people using them for life advice, for therapy, for friendship. That is not hypothetical, it’s happening this very moment. I hope I’m wrong, though!

thank you so much for this video, I have been seeing unironincally bullying and very problematic abusive behavior from people I used to respect towards anybody even mentioning that they use AI and you can smell the moral and intellectual superiority in it. Thank you, as someone with serious medical OCD this was really meaningful ♥️.

What a great thoughtful piece. Using AI a lot I found I do get lazy on the day to day stuff, but also it makes me think in more creative ways. I am more willing to explore out of the box ideas. So I have no idea if that’s good or bad. But it is different

I find this discussion very interesting. At the school I teach at we are having discussions about how students are using chat gpt in their work and we are seeing less critical thinking from them. I teach Spanish and coding, so I am in favor of having a machine that can produce appropriate responses to students trying out new phrases in a new language, assisting the teacher as a 1-1 conversational companion. I think we as teachers need to shift from just grading the paper to interviewing the student about their findings. It feels unfair to those of us who went through academia without this tool, but I recall going through high school having to go to the library to read books and now from the comfort of my couch I can find any information needed. We taught children the importance of citing sources then. We should of course be cautious of the dangers it poses through misuse, but I would like to learn more about how we can use it to the benefit of society.

I recall one of the Socratic dialogues pondering the question of whether writing (perhaps the original intellectual technology) would corrupt human memory, among other things. If memory was good enough for Homer, after all… Having acquired the habit of memorizing poetry (TS Eliot’s The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock being the task at hand) I stand in awe of Homer’s achievements, but I’m nonetheless disinclined to dismiss that particular intellectual technology.

As someone with autism, I find the way you speak and describe all things neuroscience very calming 😅 just the way you describe things going on and how that relates to the human brain and history almost helps ease some of the anxiety I feel around changes etc ☺️
