@markwilmson: How to answer the interview question, “Can we contact your current employer?” When you're in the interview or reference stage and they ask about contacting your current employer, you can say something like this: “I’d be happy to provide professional references from previous roles, but I’d prefer that my current employer not be contacted at this stage. I’m still employed there, and it’s a confidential search. I want to avoid any disruption or misunderstanding while I explore this opportunity.” That’s a completely professional and reasonable boundary. Good companies will respect it. (Most companies already understand this and give you the option of marking "Do Not Contact My Current Employer".) If they push for verification of employment later in the process (like during background checks), you can offer: - A recent pay stub, offer letter, or W-2 as proof of employment. If necessary, a managerial colleague or client you trust. I don’t like even providing references. For privacy, I don’t want past employers to know anything about what I’m doing in my present life

This should be a given. What if they don’t hire you and they ruin it for you at your current employer.

I said no and they still did it anyway. current management called me to the office in tears , offering a dollar raise for me to stay. I stayed and never got my raise.

HR here: He is so correct! NO. Always NO. And that question amongst our profession is so outdated and we won't ask.We also typically don't allow hiring managers to complete reference checks. Most of us use a 3rd party to simply confirm employment dates and past/current positions. If asked in person it should be a flag and you are still pressed to answer after politely declining RUN. They will not respect you or your boundaries once employed.

My son provided professional references. Said no to contact current employer. He didn’t get the job because the hiring manager thought it was odd that he said no. That’s crazy.

If only I had seen your video sooner…Currently going under a background check for a position at a big company. A few weeks, the screening company asked if they could contact my current employer and I said no, providing them with my work certificate instead. Last week, the hiring company (not screening company) REQUIRED (they really used that word) my permission to contact my current employer. The thing is the offer is contingent on the background check. Therefore, I cannot give my notice until the background check is over and the offer finalized. However, I understood by the tone of the email that I had no choice and they made it seem like it was yay or nay. They also pressed me to reply within the next 2 business days. Feeling as if under duress, I gave my permission. I just don’t understand why they absolutely want someone from my current job to confirm that I work there. It’s only common sense in my opinion that you don’t want your current employer to know you’re looking elsewhere.

That’s just not a reasonable request. Would never agree to letting them contact an existing employer. There are too many alternatives for a company to get info on us.
