It’s funny, I’ve been sent things out of the blue a few times when other craftspeople can see I could probably be doing something better or more efficiently. This parcel arrived from Nicky, of @Hartley and Noble, a few days ago, a very kind gift and something I’ve needed for a long-time—a batt system, a set of tools that allows me to throw shapes on batts more spontaneously, as previously whenever I throw flatware or more complex shapes, I tend to throw a skim of clay, blast it dry and them secure MDF batts onto that.   The above works but it’s slow to setup, which means if I want to make some components for say, a teapot or anything else low and wide, I’m perhaps less likely to do it on a whim. Nicky sent what’s called an over-the-wheel batt and a Russian doll batt, this way instead of throwing what’s essentially a clay sticky pad, I just slot the wooden part over my Rohde HMT 500s wheel-head, and into this the individual batts, tiles, slide in.   I’ve never been particularly good at introducing new tools like this into my workshop or practice. I still, for the most part, use the techniques I was taught in college and during my apprenticeships. They’ve stuck, so to speak, and thus making changes always feels a little unusual. I think for people just starting out, these tools are wonderful if you’re struggling to lift pots off the wheel with your bare hands, yet at the same time, teaching yourself to be able to lift pots off the wheel with just your hands is a useful skill to have, as is throwing pots on MDF rounds of skims of clay, like mentioned earlier. Of course, we all fall into our own routines when it comes to making pottery but at heart, I believe it’s a good idea to be limited by the tools we use, just in case you find yourself somewhere making without them.   Thanks @hartleyandnoble, I really appreciate the gift!   (Product gifted, no payment received in return for promotion and no prior arrangement to create such a post, I’m merely a tool-obsessed make and this was sent as thank you)   #pottery #ceramics #unboxing #craftsmanship #hartleyandnoble
