@africanheritagecity: Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to be elected to the United States Congress, the first Black candidate for a major-party nomination for President of the United States and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination Shirley Chisholm was known her whole life for taking "a resolute stand against economic, social, and political injustices". Brooklyn born, she identified as Barbadian American, she was an excellent student and as even better teacher, becoming involved in politics in the 1950s. Despite the discrimination she faced as a Black woman, she managed to be elected to the New York State Assem in 1964 and to Congress in 1968. She announced her presidential bid on January 25, 1972, calling for a "bloodless revolution" at the forthcoming Democratic nominating convention for the 1972 U.S. presidential election. She became the first African American to run for a major party's nomination for President of the US and the first woman ever to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Her campaign was underfunded and she was underrated and ignored, seen as a mere symbol and not actual candidate by her white colleagues but also by her fellow Black men. She said "When I ran for the Congress, when I ran for president, I met more discrimination as a woman than for being black. Men are men". After a long and difficult campaign (three confirmed threats were made against her life), she received a total of 152 first-ballot votes for the presidential nomination during. Her total gave her fourth place in the roll-call tally, behind McGovern's winning total of 1,728 delegates. She said that she ran for office "in spite of hopeless odds to demonstrate the sheer will and refusal to accept the status quo". She had a vision 60 years ago, a vision that has yet to become reality. She knew she was meant to be a catalyst for change, she knew that someone had to remind America that America has many faces and they're all worthy of a seat at the table. In her words: "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair". Give it up for Shirley Anita Chisholm, "Unbought and Unbossed". 👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 #ShirleyChisholm #UnboughtAndUnbossed (her famous campaign slogan) #blackhistory365✊🏾 #BlackExcellence #BlackWomenLead #CatalystForChange #blackgirlmagic #blackexcellence

This lady was way before her time and I’m afraid that’s what happens to all of the black community Follow black activist. They were just too good being as good is a curse at the same time it’s a blessing.

Amerikkka didn't want Ms Chisolm to become President because of her race and not wanting to see real change in this country just like with the case of Kamala Harris not winning the 2024 élection.
