Long post incoming! With my twins turning 1 comes another huge milestone: I have officially breastfed for one year. Something I have not talked about on here before is how difficult breastfeeding was at first. I went into breastfeeding with an open mind, knowing that it would be difficult, and the likelihood that I wouldn’t be able to handle it was high. And I was fine with that. On our second night in the hospital, running on probably 4 hours of sleep over the course of two days, I was done. Cluster feeding was taking a toll on me and I felt horrible in every way. I was in pain, frustrated, emotionally drained, and exhausted. I remember saying to my husband “I think I just need to give them formula.” He called a lactation consultant to come help us, and by some insane coincidence, she was a twin mom. She helped and encouraged me, and let me know that while there was nothing wrong with formula, she believed in me and knew I could do it. And I wanted to, so I did. When we got home from the hospital, I did call lactation several times in a panic, terrified I wasn’t producing enough and that my babies were struggling. Then at their first pediatrician appointment, their weight was a little low, so we had the supplement with formula. Every hour and a half I was nursing, then pumping and giving them a bottle of whatever I pumped, then following up with a bottle of formula (and the formula upset their tummies so much.) This only lasted a week, and then we were able to drop the formula feeds and go to nursing followed by a bottle of pumped milk (this was literally so so exhausting.) until eventually, we were able to drop the bottle feeds and just nurse. However, throughout all of this, I was in pain. We hit 3 months old and nursing was still incredibly painful. 3 months of dreading those first few seconds of latching. We consulted with pediatric dentist, who found both girls at tongue AND lip ties. They were revised, and the improvement in their latches was immediate. And then, as soon as it felt like we FINALLY had breastfeeding down, it was time for me to go back to work. Going from exclusively nursing to pumping 80% of the time was such a difficult transition. I experienced DMER every time I pumped at work, and hated not being able to nurse my babies as much as I had been. I also noticed when pumping I was a “just enougher”, never having any extra milk that we could stash in the freezer. This was mentally so hard after going from being in an over supply on maternity leave. I became obsessed with the ounces, and obsessed with my freezer stash and protecting it. It caused so much stress and anxiety, but it was so important to me that we could continue to breastfeed, because truthfully, I loved it. On the weekends I would cherish being able to nurse them and not have to base my entire work day on pump breaks. Somewhere in this journey I made the decision to leave my full time job and start a part time job. In making this decision this allowed me to be with my girls 5 days a week, so I only had to pump 2 days. This honestly saved my sanity. I no longer was barely scraping by to produce enough milk. My freezer stash grew, and being able to nurse my babies ad lib brought me so much more peace of mind. Now, at a year old, it feels like I don’t have to worry any more. Not having to worry about how much milk is in the freezer, how much I have left over at the end of the day, if we will have enough, or if we will lose my stash if we have a power outage… finally, the anxiety is over. I plan to continue nursing until my babies are ready to wean, but for right now, it seems that they’re not ready for that yet. So we will keep going until they are. And I am happy to provide that for them. I am thankful for my body for being able to nourish my daughters in this way, and so proud of myself for over coming every little obstacle that was thrown our way🤍
