Fertility scientist here: I’ve also read this paper top to bottom. the quality of this study is flimsy at best. The entire method is based on face value (the researchers trusting the apps claims) not actually checking code or network traffic. It gives stardust praise yet their privacy policy is thin and lacking. Stardust does not let you opt out of third party sharing (nor does it disclose third parties) which is something Clue does incredibly well. They have also declared a conflict of interest meaning the study has built in bias. Bottom line, this paper is not strong evidence. For example it praises stardust for its end to end encryption yet independent security audits have shown that this isn’t true and stardust can still decrypt user data. On another note, this paper is limited to privacy policies (not actually practice) and doesn’t consider other important factors like stardust claiming to be “science backed” yet they don’t employ a scientific or medical team. Always happy to chat more about this. This is something I am deeply researching right now and single sources of information like this cannot draw a definitive line.
