The egusi plant which is the melon crop is said to have originated from South East asia, the crop got to the edo people as a gift from the Portuguese to the oba of benin likewise the cotton crop and also some livestocks, talking of cow, chicken, the melon and cotton were converted to food the melon soup originally called ogi-isi, which ogi stands for (melon) and isi(far) referencing the melon was gotten from afar brought by the Portuguese and later was corrupted to egusi by Nigerians, another word for eguisi in edo is ikpo-ogi, which ikpo(portuguese) ogi(melon) which further also reference its orgin of the crop melon as gift to the benins egusi is eaten with pounded yam in benin custom and the cuisine spread across the benin empire but it was only eaten during festivel and religious gathering it was like rice and stew in the present day Nigeria stable
