In Michigan zebra mussels are a problem. They make the water TOO clear and the algae and other plant life go wild and it ruins the natural ecosystem of that body of water.

I have seen a lot of comments on eating these mussels: these are freshwater, while edible, the ones you are thinking of at stores & restaurants are marine mussels. In fact, many freshwater species are endangered.
