FULL VIDEO ON MY YOUTUBE (link in bio) When I escaped my abuser, I discovered that surviving the abuse was only the beginning and only half the battle. I thought that once I got away, I could finally focus on healing, on my freedom, on building my life. Instead, I have been constantly fighting to convince the systems that are supposed to protect us that what happened was serious and that this man needs to be held accountable before he harms again. I found myself doing the work of law enforcement, detectives, and the courts for them, since they were refusing to do so themselves. In this video, I break down some of the institutional negligence, systemic failures, and administrative hurdles I have faced while trying to hold my abuser accountable across two states and federally. From law enforcement returning seized firearms and video evidence directly to him, to prosecutors dismissing charges to clear dockets, and so much more - the burden to investigate, track, and report always fell entirely on me. Being a “perfect victim” and a “squeaky wheel” (as a detective ‘praised’ me for) with mountains of documentation and video and audio evidence still wasn’t enough to get the system to do its job. My abuser still walks free as I continue to actively fight to hold him accountable.
